Standing at the corner of Kerse Lane since 1786…
For more than two centuries, The Orchard Hotel has been woven into the story of Falkirk. From its commanding position in the heart of the town centre, generations have passed through its doors, making it one of Falkirk’s most enduring landmarks.
The story begins in 1786 when local physician Dr Meek commissioned a grand residence on this very site. So significant was his influence that his name lives on today in nearby Meeks Road.
The building's history has been anything but ordinary. In 1825, a devastating fire threatened its future, yet it rose again from the ashes, rebuilt and restored to continue its place at the centre of town life. As Falkirk flourished during the Victorian era, the house took on a new role as the prestigious Miss Littles Girls’ School of Etiquette, where young ladies were educated in the manners, accomplishments and social graces expected of the time.
A new chapter began in 1896 when the property entered the ownership of the Crawford family, marking the start of a remarkable connection that would span generations. As Falkirk grew and changed through the decades, so too did the building. It served many purposes – from private homes and guest accommodation to bustling shops – constantly adapting to meet the needs of the community around it.
By 1933, additional bedrooms had been added and The Orchard had firmly established itself as a cornerstone of Falkirk hospitality. Through wars, industrial change, celebrations and everyday life, it has remained a familiar and welcoming presence in the town centre.
Today, The Orchard Hotel proudly continues that tradition, combining over 240 years of history with modern comfort. Whether you're enjoying a drink in the bar, dining in the bistro, or staying the night, you're becoming part of a story that has been unfolding since the eighteenth century – a story deeply rooted in the heart of Falkirk.
